Garden leave is a period where an employer pays an employee their salary and benefits but instructs them to stay away from work, typically during their notice period after resigning or being terminated, to protect confidential information, client relationships, or business strategy before they join a competitor or start their own venture, acting as a buffer while they remain technically employed. During this time, the employee remains on the payroll, must adhere to their contract (including confidentiality), but cannot access systems, contact clients, or work for others, allowing the company time for handover and succession planning.
